The Unwavering Dichotomy

Image
Another edition of the MSSNUCH da’wah enlightenment program was held on Wednesday, 26th of January 2022 With its dignified lecturer (Ustaadh Ibrahim Aikoore) explaining the importance of Salah(prayer) and the rulings on whoever abandons it.  An awe-inspiring justice was made to the topic by the lecturer as we came to understand that salah literarily means Du’aa(supplication), and it’s an act of worship which collectively engages the heart, mouth, and limbs and in some cases may involves money. Also, Salah is the second most important pillar of Islam after the Shahaadah and the major difference between a Muslim and kaafir(unbeliever). Sadly, many Muslims today totally abandons this major act of worship or performs it with utmost negligence. The crucial state of salaah in Islam had been accentuated with the saying of the prophet ﷺ which commands us not to rebel against a tyrant Muslim ruler who oppresses and abuses the Muslims if he says his salaah. Also, with the Nabiyy on hi...

Coping with Stress – A Muslim Medical Student’s Guide

Image
Life has taken a new turn. We now move from protracted rounds to evening calls. The hustle for accident and emergency procedure is real. Whether you’re attending SOP or MOP, it may start to feel like a vicious cycle. All these still have to be combined with study. Then there’s Rona, usually lurking in the shadow, only showing her face sometimes. Well, dear brethren, our journey has only begun and I hope we have our seatbelts on. If you’re going through all these there’s a high chance of stress already being your major and trust me you want to beat stress. Because when life seems to be all stress you could as well feel like you’re actually studying stress. If you’re not careful and go on like this you could end up graduating with a major in stress and that’s not going to be good. Stress is the normal physical response we have when faced with a challenge. It is what we feel when we have to handle more than we used to causing our body to respond as though we’re in danger. Bas...

Sports in Islam

Image
“Teach your children swimming, archery and horse-riding”, said the Holy Prophet (SAW) in a hadith reported by Ibn Umar. This shows that the Holy Prophet (SAW) himself encourages sporting activities. In another narration reported by Tabarani, the Prophet   (SAW) said, “Any action without the remembrance of Allah is either a diversion or heedlessness except for four actions: Walking from target to target (during archery practice); training a horse; playing with one’s family; and learning to swim”. The Prophet (SAW) did not only encourage sports, he also engaged in them. It was reported that Aisha (RA), the Prophet’s wife used to compete with her husband in foot racing for fun and pleasure. She said “I competed with the Messenger of Allah (in running) and overtook him. Later, when I had put on some weight, I once again competed with him, but this time he overtook me and said we are even afterwards”. This also indicates that sports is not restricted to men only, women can...

Modern Islamic History: How much do you know?

Image
First impression they say lasts longer. The first impression most people have regarding “Islam” or “Muslim” is that of conflict, oppression or terrorism; so much that the President of a first world country claims “Islam is in crisis.” Helping most people seal their conviction is the rampage global terrorism, Middle Eastern wars and legacies of some dictators. Non-Muslim see Islam as savage, synonymous to violence. Some Muslims find themselves cornered, constricted in disentangling Islam from the violence and savagery ascribed to it. This leaves them in a dilemma often with one of three options: dissociate themselves from Islam, join the caucus spotlighting Islam as the center of chaos, or retreating to a defensive pose whenever their faiths are quizzed.   In an attempt to offer an alternate imagery to the presumptuous image of modern Islam, I will tell in a series of articles the history of modern Islam. What roles Islam played in the grand scheme of things? What role...

TIME TRAVEL WITH A VIRUS

Image
In December 2019, a novel type of coronavirus named COVID-19 was identified in Wuhan, China. It has since then spread rapidly all over the country and around the world. The virus was isolated then and identified as a pathogen on January 6, 2020 after which its genome-wide sequence was decoded a few days after. The World Health Organization (WHO) had a meeting on January 30, 2020 at which they declared the viral outbreak from China a public health emergency concern. On March 11, 2020 the WHO declared the virus outbreak a pandemic and called countries to take immediate actions to manage the situation. Flashback to the mid-1960s, human coronaviruses were first identified and named so for the crown-like spikes on their surface. They are alpha and beta coronaviruses of which the MERS-CoV causes Middle East Respiratory Syndrome/MERS, the SARS-CoV causes severe acute respiratory syndrome/SARS and the SARS-CoV-2 the novel one causes COVID-19. In March 2020, the Federal Government ...

LIBYA POST US INTERVENTION

Image
The rebels were about to be “extinguished”, completely surrounded with no means of escape. This was the highlight of events pre-dating the US intervention in the 2011 Libyan uprisings. A little backstory here, Muammar Gaddafi has been the President of Libya for 41 years after a bloodless coup. He had toppled the monarchy of King Idris and had led the country since then. Fast-forward to February 2011, the civil uprising which started in neighbouring Tunisia had spread to Libya. Violence was unleased with heavy fighting and the unrest soon degenerated into a civil war with the government forces on one side and the rebels taking up arms on the other side. In the first series of US interventions, the government assets were frozen and the National Transitional Council formed by the rebel was recognised as the legitimate representative of Libya. By March 2011, a no-fly zone was imposed over Libya, backed by UN resolution 1973. Two days after the resolution, French fighter jets fl...

THE LOOMING METAVERSE

Image
© Pinterest If you are very familiar with the most recent trends in technology you’d most likely have heard these two words. If you haven’t then get ready to have the time of your life. This represents a significant innovation in technology especially in regards to social media. The website Lexico defines the metaverse as “ A virtual-reality space in which users can interact with a computer-generated environment and other users.” USA Today calls the metaverse “a combination of multiple elements of technology, including virtual reality, augmented reality and video where users live within a digital universe.”If you’ve ever played game wearing special “googles” headset and it seems as real as you are in it that’s virtual reality. It is said that as the metaverse expands, it will offer a hyper-real alternative world for people to coexist in. Traces of it already exist in games like Fortnite and Minecraft. Supporters of the metaverse envisage its users working, playing and staying con...

OWOLABI

Image
It's a Thursday morning and there's what could only be described as a torrent of people in front of the only mansion in the neighbourhood. Now, the number of people there isn't a surprise here. What is surprising is the variance in the predisposition of the persons. Some were crying, wailing, rolling on the ground, others were looking bemused, confused and lost. "Kilewi? Taloku? Hahh! Temibami! Owo school omo mi!", screamed one of the women there. You're probably wondering who these people are, where they are and why that woman was screaming about her child's school fees. The mansion in question belonged to Chief Owolabi Olabomi alias "OwO, the money bag"(trust me, I agree that the nickname's tacky). Chief Owolabi was the richest man in the town who was born the son of the richest man of the town who was in turn the son of the richest man of the town. You get the picture. Theirs was the typical generational wealth story. One of their forefa...

DON’T BELITTLE THE LITTLE

Image
Few drops make the sea, little leaks empty the pail. You do not get to know the worth of every drip till you’ve filled a bucket and more. Also, leaking buckets don’t scream until their contents are completely gone. Quite often, we tend to move heads-on with the “big” necessary acts of worship (which of cause are the basics of the religion and should not be compromised) while undermining the “not so significant” ones which could fetch us massive rewards with Allah. Truth is the word of Allah which says “…And the weighing of deeds on that day would be just, so those whose scales are heavy – it is they who will be successful…” So whatever deed we present with on the day of judgement would be justly measured, which would ultimately determine our final abode. However, we remain plunged into the oblivion of what our defining acts could be, which would provide us with just the right amount of tilt needed to scale through. It could be just that smile that accompanied your Teslim ...

THE PRACTICE OF GRATITUDE

Image
Messenger of Allah (S.A.W) said: “Strange are the ways of a believer for there is good in every affair of his and this is not the case with anyone else except in the case of a believer for if he has an occasion to feel delight, he thanks (God), thus there is a good for him in it, and if he gets into trouble and shows resignation (and endures it patiently), there is a good for him in it.” [Sahih Muslim] Shukr is an Arabic term denoting thankfulness, gratitude or acknowledgment. Allah mentioned gratitude alongside iman in Surah an-Nisa 4:147 “What can Allah gain by your punishment, if you are grateful and you believe?…”   This emphasizes the importance of gratitude in the life of a Muslim. HOW TO ENSURE THE PRACTICE GRATITUDE AS MUSLIMS 1) ACKNOWLEDGING OUR EMAAN (FAITH) By being grateful for being a Muslim and also being among the people of eeman. Allah says in the Quran: “Exalt Allah for having guided you and that you may be grateful.” [Qur’an Surah 2, Ayah 186]. ...
