OKANLAWON

Everyone calls me stupid. Nobody wants to be my friend. My class teacher is fed-up with my condition. She is not happy with me. She will wonder why I do not get things straight like the other pupils but was also careful not to call me names. She will caution other pupils who try to insult me for my disabilities. My mother died about two years ago and the loss depressed me and made me lose interest in a lot of things. She was so supportive but could not achieve much before her demise. I am a Primary Six pupil who cannot write his name correctly. In fact I’m fed up with myself and maybe my friends are right; I am actually stupid. I was pushed to my present class due to my age for I can neither read nor write. The alphabets appear blurred, some inverted others seem absent making it difficult to merge words to form meaningful sentence. Dad now has a new wife as he claims that she will take care of me which got me really scared. Her name is Lucy. Aunty Lucy promised to help me out...

SARAH: ABRAHAM'S FIRST WIFE

Image
Sarah was the only woman of Ibrahim's people to believe in Allah. She afterwards became his wife. She stood by her husband all the time when calling his people to Allah. When Ibrahim realized that no other than his wife and his nephew, Lut, was going to believe in his call, he decided to immigrate to a city caller Ur and another called Haran and then departed for Palestine with them. Abu Hurairah narrated that Ibrahim did not tell a lie except on three occasions: twice for the sake of Allah when he said: "I am sick," when his people were holding a festival in honor of their gods, Ibrahim excused himself by saying he was sick, and when he said: "(I have not done this but) the big idol has done it." The third was while Ibrahim and Sarah were on a journey. They passed through the territory of a tyrant. Someone said to the tyrant: "This man Ibrahim is accompanied by a very charming lady." So, he sent for Ibrahim and asked him about Sarah saying "Who...

COUNTDOWN TO DETONATION

Image
Eons ago was the age of giant, majestic beings called dinosaurs. They roamed the earth in its breadth and wildness. We have seen their remains, so we cannot deny that they have once existed. Theories of their extinction have been postulated, most notable of them being the giant meteor that slammed the earth thousands of millennia ago causing such apocalyptic change in the earth’s climate as to wipe out the dinosaurs and their cousins. We know that entire races of humanity have been wiped out. We also know that the world will inevitably come to an end. What we have failed to realize is that before the end finally comes, things can get a lot worse. Living can become unbearable, and there may come a time when the people alive will envy those in the graves. Indeed today is not the age of dinosaurs, and there is no imminent threat of a meteor slamming into earth. But what is imminent and dangerous, and boasts an existential threat on par with the meteor of the dinosaur age is global...

KURULUS OSMAN

Image
Demonstration of love between co-wives, case of Bala and Mahun Hatun Are you married to two wives? Or are you one of the two wives? You need to watch one of the episodes of Kurulus Osman, Season 3. Even though movies are for entertainment, there are lessons to be learned from the demonstration of love between Osman Bey, and his two wives, Bala Hatun and Mahun Hatun. Read the dialogue below: Intro; Since Mahun Hatun got married to Osman Bey as a second wife and gave birth to Orhan, Mahun, the fearless warrior had not participated in any holy war. She had since been dedicated to taking care of her son, the heir of the Kayi tribe. So upon hearing that her Bey and his Alps were planning to go on another, she asked: Mahun Hatun :   Bey, if you allow me, I’d like to participate in this glorious conquest. Osman Bey : This isn’t the right time because in a holy war, you could be martyred, which is a good end for every believer, but once that happens who will take care of O...

ISLAMIC TOURISM

Image
Tourism refers to the business of travelling to a place for recreation, vacation or trade purposes. Tourism is as old as the religion of Islam. Islamic tourism is such that muslims travel to places where they are able to practice their religion with ease and have access to halal-friendly facilities. There is a surging increase in the demand for Islamic tourism and this may have to do with the expansion in the muslim population. If you ever need to travel to a muslim country during holidays or you are thinking of relocating to a muslim country, you might want to consider any of these: Ø United Arab Emirates (UAE): It has a muslim population of about 76 per cent. The capital is Abu Dhabi. Even though for most people, UAE means just a place-Dubai, the country hosts six more emirates and each with its own character and allure. UAE is a muslim friendly destination with a lot of magnificience and brilliance to delight its tourists. Also of great benefit to female muslims are several ...

LAYLATUL QADR

Image
It is known by many names and allusions; many are its seekers and adherents. It is LaytalulQadr, a night that is greater than a thousand months.Allaah has called it Laylat al-Qadr because of its great value and high status with Allaah, and because so many sins are forgiven and so many faults are concealed during this night. For it is the night of forgiveness, as it was reported in al-Saheehayn from Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever stays up during Laylat al-Qadr out of faith and in the hope of earning reward, all his previous sins will be forgiven” (Al-Bukhaari, 1910; Muslim, 760). Also, it is the night   on which the Qur’aan was sent down. Ibn ‘Abbaas and others said: ”Allaah sent down the Qur’aan at one time from al-Lawh al-Mahfooz to Bayt al-‘izzah in the first heaven, then it was revealed to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in stages according to...

Ramadan, and indeed, life generally is different from how we know it in this pandemic.  Lockdown restrictions and bans on congregational gatherings that have ensued from the  COVID-19 outbreak that started last year December in the Wuhan city of China have affected  Muslims globally. Our masjids have been closed and people have to stay apart from each  other to keep each other safe. Although the internet and social media have helped palliate the  effect on lecture gatherings and other beneficial communication in this holy month, the  difference remains almost palpable for some. Students also have it differently too. They are isolated from friends, people with whom they have grown in faith and have spent the last few Ramadans with; people they would normally share this lovely season with. This segment interviews Muslim studentsof the University College Hospital on their experience of Ramadan in this pandemic. Below is a conversation between a board membe...
