ORIGIN OF THE HIJRAH CALENDAR

Image
By Abdussalaam Alimi. A. All praise be to ALLAH (Mighty and Exalted) for making us witness another hijrah year (1445 years after hijrah). We as Muslims, we have been counting the hijrah calendar right from our primary school days (especially those that attend Islamic primary school). But do we really know what it is, how did it came into existence or did it just emerge suddenly? To answer the questions above, let’s move forward! During the early period of the messengership of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), the disbeliever of the Quraysh realized that the Muslims are increasing in number then they began to melt out torture on them, most especially the weak among them and the slaves. Example of such people are the family of ‘Ammar bn Yaasir. His father (Yaasir) died during this torture while his mother, Sumayyah bint Khayyat was killed on solaah by Abu jahl, who put sword through her, thus she was the first female martyr in Islaam. Anytime th...

Harmony in learning: Integrating Religious Studies With Academic Pursuits

Image
by Aisha Pamilerin Ibrahim In the pursuit of holistic education, schools often overlook the profound wisdom embedded in religious teachings. However, the Holy Quran provides invaluable guidance on harmonizing religious studies with academic pursuits, enriching students' learning experiences and nurturing their spiritual growth. In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:269), Allah says, " He grants wisdom to whom He pleases, and whoever is granted wisdom, he indeed is given a great good and none but men of understanding mind ." This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking wisdom and knowledge, encompassing both secular and religious domains. By integrating religious studies into academic curricula, schools empower students to cultivate wisdom and understanding across all facets of their education. Surah Al-Ankabut (29:69) further reinforces this integration, stating, " And those who strive in Our (cause), We will certainly guide them to Our Paths: For verily Allah is with those who ...

Multiplicity of Life

Image
By Obanla Mariam Life is a term that defies all meaning, you know, it’s just like walking up to a child and asking for the meaning of life, or asking a teenager what life is all about or asking a man on his way to the office the definition of life, or asking a woman on her way to the grave to visit her deceased offspring what she thinks about life. These set of people will give you various definitions and views on life. They will obviously give you different opinions. This will also give you an insight on how life is. Life is just like a Rubik Cube. Imagine a group of 4 kids sit around the sides of a multi colored cube, the side each kid faces is what he or she use to describe the whole cube. The colors, the pattern, the design, the orderliness or disorderliness of each side is said to be the representative of the cube to each child. Such similitude is said to occur in each definition of life of the various age group above; the child sees life as a milk and honey phenomena, the teenage...

Health Benefits of Fasting

Image
By Bello Ruqayyah Abiodun Fasting is the act of abstaining from food and or drinks, during certain hours for whatever purpose. Similarly, the literal meaning of the Arabic term which is Sawm (صَوم) means any form of abstinence, but when used in a religious context, it refers to refraining from engaging in certain actions that would make a person’s fast void as declared by the Lord. What fasting does Islam recommend; Continued or Intermittent fasting? Al-Nawawi said in al-Majmoo’, 6/357:  "With regard to the ruling on continual fasting, it is 'makrooh', and there is no difference of opinion among us concerning that". But is it makrooh in the sense of being forbidden or makrooh in the sense of being disliked? There are two opinions concerning that. The more correct of which according to the companions and the apparent meaning is that it is 'makrooh' in the sense of being forbidden.  Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen also said in al-Sharh al-Mumti’, 6/443:  "It appea...
